How to Avoid Offending Your Blog Readers

June 14th, 2011

Many people today are using blogs as a way to marketing their business model. For that reason alone it is important for blog owners to be careful not to offend the very people who might buy what they are selling whether it happens to be products of services. How can you avoid offending your readers in your blog posts?

Know Your Readers

One of the easiest ways to avoid this mistake is to know your readers. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to know them individually, but you do want to know the type of audience that comes to your blog. By knowing your target audience you can gain some kind of perspective into the type of audience that would be interested in what you are marketing.

Avoid Bias in Your Posts

If you are writing about controversial topics, avoid showing your opinion to your readers. Use an informational tone rather than opinion. For instance, if you are writing about a government policy with which you don’t agree, do not allow that to show in your post—just present the facts and let your readers draw their own conclusions. The purpose of your blog is to inform your readers without malice.

Avoid Foul Language

While most people today are used to reading a hearing curse words, most are still not comfortable with foul language. If you develop the habit of using words that most people find offensive, you will decrease rather than increase your readership. If you do happen to use a word that may be offensive, it should be when you are directly quoting someone on a controversial topic.

Sex, Violence and Religion

How much of these topics you wish to include in your blog will depend on the type of audience you have. It’s important to understand there are religious groups that find pre-marital sex offensive (Muslims and many Mormons for one) while others are averse to reading about violence, especially brutality or child molestation and sodomy.

Do Not Make Assumptions

You can also offend your audience if you pretend to know how they feel on certain topics. For instance, you may not believe in abortion under any circumstances, but your audience will probably consist of those who are pro-life and those who are pro-choice. It is not good business to use your blog as a way to judge the beliefs of your audience.

The rule of thumb is simple – if you wouldn’t say it to someone’s face, don’t say it on your blog. Your blog is a place for you to post your honest ideas and opinions. Keep it real while respectful and your readers will love you until the end.

It takes time and talent to produce good online content

May 5th, 2011

A big reason quality online content is important has to do with search engines. When these various search engines’ robots read your content, they’re going to go through and work their magic and, hopefully, reward you for it. While there are various algorithms they use to rank your website, producing regular content is one way to improve your SEO results.

However, there are other factors to consider when writing content – like the fact that a human being may actually read it. And it goes beyond just appealing to the reader, there are some significant SEO benefits to engaging readers and keeping them on your site.

Take this example from SEOmoz. The had one writer produce two different articles; each article was on the same topic and included about the same number of words, but one article earned 378 links and averaged a viewing time of 5:41 while the other earned six links and people stayed on the page, on average, for less than 90 seconds.

They went on to explain the differences between the articles – how they used pictures, headlines, bullet points, etc. There would have been a little difference in how these respective articles were read by the search engines, but a huge difference in how they were read by people.

So what does all of this mean? Yes, it does take more time to make an article look nice and attract (and keep) a reader’s attention. But wouldn’t you rather have the 378 links than you would the six links? Wouldn’t you rather have people reading through your whole article and then sharing it with others?

You may have been able to write an additional two or three so-so articles with the extra time you put into creating a top quality article, but you certainly wouldn’t be getting three to four times the benefit. And while article marketing still has its benefits, Google’s Panda Update still leaves the future a bit uncertain for that method.

So take the time to create quality articles that don’t just make the robots happy, but the people too.

How Important is Your Blog Host Customer Support

April 29th, 2011

It is essential to select the right blog hosting company. Generally, blog host providers claim that they provide uptimes between 99% and 99.9%. Though this service guarantee is enticing, these numbers can turn out to be deceitful. The difference of 0.9% can actually be large, affecting the degree of commerce on your site.

With that in mind, it is crucial to consider the blog’s down time before selecting the right blog host. For this reason, it is very important to find a blog host that offers the maximum uptime and good customer support that can handle any problems arising from a down server.

Regardless of the type of blog hosting services you use, it is extremely important that you receive sufficient customer support. Having good customer support will help you when your blog is facing downtime.

Look at Your Host’s Customer Service Record

Two important services which are central when looking for a good blog host are customer service and technical support. The importance of these two factors should not be underestimated. Good customer support is a decisive factor and distinguishes good hosting companies from the others.

It is vital to understand the loss a company can incur due to blog or website failure. A survey done by Oracle shows that a business impact analysis is required to understand the cost of website downtime. However, this cost could run in millions of dollars for sites or blogs receiving heavy traffic.

Every time your website or blog is down, you lose some customers- some of them even permanently. Without a proper web monitoring system, it might take too long for a site owner to notice that the website or blog is down. And at that time, if they do not get enough support from the blog host, the results can lead to an even higher rate of customer loss.

This is why you must select a web host that provides 24 hour quality support. Prompt attention is required as soon as blog failure is noted. It is important because there has already been a lot of wasted time between noticing of blog failure and the actual time it happened. A delay on the part of blog host can only add to the injury.

Uptime Impact

To begin with, it is essential to select the web hosting company that offers maximum uptime. As mentioned earlier, there can be a big difference between 99% and 99.9% uptime. Take a look at these examples to get a clearer idea:

99.99% Uptime

There are about 4.38 downtime minutes per month, which means 0.073 hours each month. This is equal to 52.56 minutes per year, or 0.876 downtime hours per year.

99.9% Uptime

There are about 43.8 downtime minutes per month, which means 0.73 hours each month. This is equal to 525.6 minutes per year, or 8.76 downtime hours per year.

99% Uptime

There are about 438 downtime minutes per month, which means 7.3 hours each month. This is equal to 5256 minutes per year, or 87.6 downtime hours per year.

As you can see from the example, minor changes in the percentage figure can impact e-commerce performance to a large degree.

A good blog host would not just provide maximum uptime, but great customer support as well. There are many ways to contact your hosting customer support. There are toll free phone numbers, ticketing systems, and chat options. If you opt to contact support using a ticket, they should reply back within 12-14 hours of submission.

Though many blog hosts claim 24 hour support, many of them turn out to be less reliable when the need arises. To select the right company, it is a good idea to check the customer support by trying to contact them at odd hours to see if they actually provide round the clock service. This would confirm if they are actually available at the times that they claim.
