The protection of customer’s private information has become a very hot topic lately. As more and more companies sell or trade information, ethical lines have been crossed and privacy policies are sometimes rendered meaningless. According to the internet coaching experts at PMI Education, this can become a real issue for entrepreneurs. They recommend that you post a concisely-worded privacy policy on your website and then stick to it. The average person will not purchase anything from a website until they’ve visited it at least five times. Why? Because they need to feel comfortable with the business and feel that they can trust them with their credit card information. So if you betray them by releasing their information, you can be sure that they will show you no loyalty.

This is not to mean that you shouldn’t seek out and store email addresses. If you can get a potential customer’s email address, you will be able to keep in touch with and develop a familiarity that can lead to sales. Remember, they need to trust in your authenticity before they will make a purchase, so prove to them that you are legitimate. Send out notices for promotions and sales. A contest can be an excellent way to get an apathetic shopper excited about your services. But whatever you do, make sure that you always back up your promises and deliver what you say you will. People notice things like this…and if you develop a reputation of reliability, they will recommend you to their friends and family. Thus, a single email address can lead to many sales if treated with respect.
